What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the dental specialty and practice of preventing and correcting irregularities of the teeth, as by the use of braces. Orthodontics involves the process of moving teeth, most commonly with the use of braces. Treatment typically takes 18-24 months; however, each case is different. For a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation, please call our office for a consultation appointment.

What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school go on to additional full-time education in an accredited orthodontic residency program supervised by orthodontists. That training lasts at least two academic years—sometimes more. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely trained experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws.

What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?

An early exam allows Dr. Green to detect and evaluate problems and plan appropriate treatment for maximum improvement. Although many children do not require orthodontic intervention at an early age, sometimes early treatment may be initiated to prevent more serious problems from developing.

Will I need to have teeth extracted when I get my braces?

Based on the treatment plan that is personalized for you, you may or may not need teeth taken out. Dr. Green will be able to make this decision after she has evaluated your records; this is one of the reasons that diagnostic records are needed.

Do you do extractions at your office?

We do not do extractions at our office, your general dentist will. Sometime we may have to refer you to an oral surgeon.

How much do braces cost?

Unfortunately, there is not a standard price for orthodontic treatment. At your consultation Dr. Green will evaluate your needs and our treatment coordinator will give you a contract proposal, which indicates how much your treatment fee, down payment and monthly payments will be.

What type of financing does your office offer?

Our office offers in-house financing with no interest.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept and file most insurance. At your consultation we will verify your insurance benefits, to see if any orthodontic coverage is available.

Can all of my appointments be after school?

Most of our patients attend school; therefore, most appointments will have to be scheduled during school hours. We will try to alternate your appointments, for example, if you have a morning appointment we will try to make your next appointment in the afternoon and vice versa. However, this is not always possible.

Am I able to drop my child off for appointments and pick him or her up after the appointment is over?

There must be an adult present during the entire appointment.

Can you play sports with braces?

Yes, you are still able to play sports with braces. A mouthguard must be worn to protect teeth.

Do I still need regular 6-month cleanings? Can these be done at your office?

Yes, when you have braces you still need to continue your routine dental visits.

We do not do cleanings at our office. Dr. Green is an orthodontist – that means that she specializes in braces. It’s against the law for her to do any other sort of treatment in our office. That’s why we can’t clean teeth, or do fillings. It’s kind of like when your regular doctor sends to you to a cardiologist or heart specialist. Your cardiologist can’t treat you for ear infections because he or she only specializes in heart treatments.

Why should you choose an orthodontist?

Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training in orthodontics, which enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments. An orthodontist learns the skills necessary to manage tooth movement (orthodontics) and also to guide facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).

How are braces placed?

Braces are placed on your teeth with adhesive (glue) and a small amount of pressure. They are not drilled or hammered on as some people think.
